Harry Potter and the Atuned Stone: Chapter Two

The children arrived at Hogwarts and the first years were met by Hagrid who was now the deputy headteacher. Albus and James hugged each other and said goodbye until they met again at the sorting. Hagrid took Albus and Jane along with the other first years by boat to the castle. It was the middle of the night, the stars shone above them but it was quite warm. The first years were nervy because they knew something was going to happen, but they didn’t know what. Soon they got across the lake and to the front doors of Hogwarts. They felt tiny compared to the doors and were soon in the Great Hall.

The Great Hall was beautiful, dressed in house colours, packed with students. The students with family in year one, were hoping that their brother or sister would be in the same house as them.

Soon the sorting ceremony began.  Hagrid was running the sorting ceremony and was quite excited by a talking hat! He looked like a full giant to the first years, even though he was  only a half-giant, because he was standing on a platform.  He had tiny black eyes, long tangled black hair and a beard that looked like he hadn’t trimmed it for ages.

First called up was Albus Severus Potter, this was because his name began with an ‘A’.  When his name was called, Albus quickly walked up to the stool and sat down.  Hagrid placed a tatty hat on his head. The rip at the brim of the hat got even wider and it was about the size of an adult’s mouth and said, “Gryffindor”! When Gryffindor was called, the students of Gryffindor cheered, Albus was over the moon and he had a huge smile on his face.  Next to come up was Chloe Armitage, she was sorted into Ravenclaw. Erin Thomas, Dean Thomas’s daughter was sorted into Gryffindor as families are often sorted into the same house. Finally Jane’s name was called out. She was sorted into Gryffindor and she was ecstatic.  At the end of the sorting ceremony, everyone realised that there had been no children sorted into Slytherin this year. The children of Slytherin were furious and Lucius Junior, the eldest son of the evil Draco Malfoy, hand shot up and asked “Professor Granger, how come there have not been any Slytherin’s this year?”

Hermione Granger had been the Headteacher of Hogwarts for the last three years. She stood up and answered “what’s done is done, what has been done cannot be undone. The sorting hat has made its decision, now be quiet.  Whilst I am on my feet, I have only one other thing to say: let the feast begin!”

While the children enjoyed the feast, Jane wondered how her mum manages to run Hogwarts. Speaking to other Gryffindor pupils they told her that Professor Granger is firm but fair and if someone got told off they really got told off. If a pupil was nice they would be rewarded.

At the end of the feast, Jane and Albus realised how luxurious the common room was and they flopped down on one of the velvet armchairs and opened up their wizarding history books they had got in Diagon Alley and read.
